Whenever possible, it is best to minimize contact with any sort of toxins. One material to be cautious about is known as BPA. What exactly is BPA, and why should you choose a holistic dentist who uses BPA-free materials? This blog post explains.

What Is BPA?

BPA is the most common way to refer to bisphenol A, a chemical compound that is often used in plastic and resin products. It is commonly found in everyday items, such as disposable water bottles, receipts, and the linings of food cans.

In the world of dental care, BPA is not a main ingredient. However, certain tooth-colored materials, like some resins that are used to fill cavities, contain BPA derivatives or related compounds. These can release tiny amounts of BPA into the body over time.

Health Risks of BPA

Many people are concerned about BPA because it is known to be an endocrine disruptor. Essentially, that means it can mess up your hormones! High levels of BPA exposure are connected to a range of health problems, including metabolic issues, different types of cancer, infertility, and neurological and behavioral conditions.

The good news is that the human body is pretty efficient at processing and eliminating BPA. However, ongoing exposure is still risky because your body can only handle so much at any given time.

Some research indicates that more than 90% of people have measurable amounts of BPA in their body! Given the great prevalence of this material, it is wise to limit exposure to it whenever circumstances allow. One simple way to do that is by opting for BPA-free dentistry.

How to Find BPA-Free Dental Restorations

If you want to make sure that your dentist uses BPA-free materials, you should feel free to ask questions. Your care team should be able to quickly tell you about the types of resin they use and whether or not they contain BPA.

Holistic dentists like Dr. Thomas at Enclave Dental strongly favor materials that are free of both BPA and derivatives. Not only do they use biocompatible resin, but for other types of restorations, like crowns and bridges, they typically recommend 100% ceramic options. Ceramic contains absolutely no BPA and has a strong record of biocompatibility.

BPA can be harmful! Talk to your dental team about the materials they use so you can have confidence in the safety and effectiveness of your oral health care.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Preetha Thomas has decades of experience in dental care. She focuses strongly on holistic treatment options and always strives to use biocompatible materials.
